Altiora Life Educators Network
A formation institution and school network working within Uganda's secondary schools and communities — building environments where every young person can flourish.
Why ALEN?
Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world. The formation young people receive today will shape the nation's future. Here's why we exist.
A crisis of formation, not academics
Young people across Uganda enter secondary school without the emotional foundations, spiritual grounding, or sense of identity and purpose they need to navigate adolescence and grow into grounded, compassionate leaders.
Overwhelmed systems with limited support
In Uganda's secondary schools, teacher-to-student ratios can reach 1:80, and the vast majority of students will never see a school counsellor. Academic pressure, digital overload, and fractured community leave young people unseen and unsupported.
Educators burnt out and under-equipped
Teachers are expected to form the whole child while managing their own unaddressed burnout. Most receive little to no training in character education, wellbeing, or socio-emotional learning.
Single-solution programmes that don't work
Most programmes target one audience — usually students — leaving the system unchanged. A student develops resilience in a Tuesday session but returns Wednesday to a school culture that contradicts it and a home that cannot reinforce it.
The Village Model
Young people do not grow in isolation. Every child who flourishes does so because someone — a parent, a teacher, a school leader — created the conditions for flourishing. ALEN equips the whole village.
Emotional Roots
Feel Well
Building resilience, self-awareness, and emotional regulation — the foundations of a grounded life.
Mental Clarity
Think Well
Equipping young people with mental health literacy, healthy habits, and a sound mind for sound decisions.
Spiritual Grounding
Be Well
Nurturing purpose, values, and inner peace — helping young people discover who they are and why they matter.
Leadership Rising
Lead Well
Developing vision, servant leadership, and character — forming young people who rise to serve their communities.
Transformative Learning Journeys
Four interconnected programmes working together to support every member of the village — because lasting change requires the whole community.
I RISE
Student Formation Programme · S.1 to S.6
"Before you can lead a nation, a community, raise a family, or serve a neighbour well — you must first be well within."
I RISE is ALEN's flagship student formation programme. Through weekly sessions, peer groups, and a year-end celebration, students build the inner foundations they need — not just to pass exams, but to grow into people of character, purpose, and resilience. The programme covers identity, resilience, integrity, service, and excellence across five thematic terms.
EQUIP
Teacher Formation & Care Programme · For all teaching staff
"You cannot pour from an empty vessel."
EQUIP recognises a simple truth: you cannot form young people if you are not yourself being formed. EQUIP gives teachers personal development, emotional resilience tools, and formation skills so they can show up fully for their students — and for themselves. It addresses trauma awareness, facilitation skills, wellbeing literacy, and formation culture.
LEAD
Leadership Formation Programme · For headteachers and senior leaders
"Culture is not what a school says it values. It is what it tolerates, rewards, and models every day."
Formation lives or dies with school leadership. LEAD supports headteachers and senior leaders through peer cohort sessions, leadership retreats, and personal coaching — equipping them to build the vision, values, and institutional culture that makes formation possible across their entire school community.
ROOTS
Parent & Family Engagement Programme · For parents and guardians
"The first classroom is the home. The first teacher is the parent."
Formation doesn't end at the school gate. ROOTS brings families into the ALEN journey — equipping parents and guardians with the understanding, tools, and community connection they need to continue what school begins. It covers navigating adolescence, partnering with school, home rhythm, and community ties.
The ALEN Difference
Most programmes ask schools to add something new. ALEN equips what is already there.
Whole Village, Not Just Students
Most programmes target one audience — usually students. ALEN forms the entire village: students, educators, school leaders, and families together.
Equip, Don't Add
ALEN does not ask schools to build something new. It equips what is already there — the teachers already trusted, the leaders already present, the parents already invested.
Formation, Not Information
Wellbeing is not a soft add-on. It is the foundation of a useful life. We treat formation as the core work of education, not a peripheral programme.
Transformation, Not Delivery
Most programmes measure delivery — how many sessions were run. ALEN measures transformation — through the Human Flourishing Index and Flourishing School Index.
Before you can lead a nation, a community, raise a family, or serve a neighbour well — you must first be well within. Wellbeing is not a soft add-on. It is the foundation of a useful life.— ALEN
